Stolen laptop exposes M&T Bank customer information

Exclusive: A reader of this blog contacted me stating that she had received a letter reporting the data loss.

I received a letter from M & T Bank indicating that a laptop computer, owned by PFPC, a third party company that provides record keeping services for M & T’s Portfolio Architect accounts was stolen from a vehicle. Clients’ account numbers, social security numbers, last name and the first two letters of their first name were stored in the computer.

Details of the incident are a bit sketchy. The bank’s website has no mention of the security breach. There is enough information stolen to commit credit card fraud or identity theft. Anyone with more information is encouraged to enter a comment to this blog post below.

Hackers accessed Frost Bank accounts

About 100 Frost Bank customers’ Visa debit card numbers were used on a shopping spending spree. The database of an unnamed national retailer was recently breached. The system contained information belonging to several other banks, however, Frost Bank is the first to publicly announced the breach.

In a letter to affected customers, Frost said Visa had advised bank officials that Visa, MasterCard, and other debit and credit card numbers from banks across the country could have been compromised. Officials at Bank of America, Citigroup and Wachovia said they did not have enough information to comment Thursday.

Missing Data - Wells Fargo Mortgage Customers

A computer containing sensitive information belonging to an unidentified number of mortgage customers went missing - possibly stolen last Friday. Details are still sketchy. The computer was being transported between Wells Fargo locations. Customers whose information was stored on the computer will be notified by May 30.

Update: Wells Fargo is offering a one-year free credit-monitoring subscription to customers whose personal information was on the missing computer.

The computer, which was being transported by an unidentified global shipping company between Wells Fargo locations, had names, addresses, Social Security numbers and mortgage loan account numbers of some Wells Fargo mortgage customers and potential customers.

Bank not responsible when they lost customer data

Unbelievable. News.com reports a ruling in the courts of Minnesota - since personal information was not abused by thieves who had stolen a laptop - Wells Fargo is not liable for negligence. The laptop contained unencrypted customer information including names, addresses, Social Security numbers and account numbers.

If the banks will not take extra precautions to safeguard your data (like encrypting it), then it is up to the informed consumer to do business with financial institutions who value their customer’s confidential data.
