Northwestern University Applicants’ Data Breach

About 17,000 Northwestern University applicants will be receiving notifications through emails and letters that their information may have been accessed by hackers.

Officials realized in May that hackers had access to names, addresses and Social Security numbers stored on nine desktop computers, and they have spent the last two months investigating the incident. The security breach happened after troubleshooting software, which allows technical support staff to access computers remotely, was installed on the computers.

University of Iowa MBA Students Exposed

The University of Iowa (UI) is telling their MBA students to be wary of identity theft. A faculty member’s laptop was stolen from a Davenport business office.

Officials have sent letters to 280 students in the program after the laptop was stolen on June 30th from a faculty member’s business office in Davenport.

It contained names, Social Security numbers and some contact information for 280 current an former students since 2002.

Personal data security breaches have plagued many schools and universities in the past few months. UI joins the list of data exposures of students and alumni.

University of Tennessee Employee Data Accessed by Hacker

About 36,000 University of Tennessee (UT) employees are being notified that their personal information was exposed to a hacker during a nine-month period (August 2005 thru May 2006).

Although we have no indication the hacker accessed or used the personal information, we are taking the precaution of notifying everyone whose information was on the database and urging them to take steps to protect themselves,” said Brice Bible, assistant vice president for information technology.

Hackers Access WIU Alumni Records

Western Illinois University Alumni records were accessed by hackers last month. Over 180,000 records were exposed. School officials emphasized Social Security numbers and some credit card information have not been used maliciously.

A computer hacker accessed computer systems containing confidential personal data of Western Illinois University alumni a full month ago, but some of the more than 180,000 people affected only learned of the problem this week.

Laptop Theft Exposes SFSU Students

San Francisco State University (SFSU) students should be on alert for identity theft. A faculty member’s car was broken into and a laptop containing 3,000 current and former student information was stolen.

The personal information included individuals’ names, full social security numbers for some students, partial social security numbers for others, and, in some cases, phone numbers or grade point average (GPA). No financial information such as credit card numbers was included on any of the student records on the laptop.

Patient Data Lost at U. of Alabama Birmingham

A computer was stolen from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The system contained Social Security numbers, names and medical information of about 10,000 UAB kidney patients.

The computer was stolen from the UAB School of Medicine Research Department in February. The people affected were not notified until June 8. UAB said that was because it took months for the school to reconstruct the missing database.
