USDA Laptop with Employee Data Exposed

An Agriculture Department employee recently had their laptop and computer bag returned after it was stolen from the worker’s car. The bag contained data printouts and the notebook computer which had names, addresses and Social Security numbers of USDA employees.

The theft may have affected about 350 full-time and part-time employees and state contractors involved in federal Agricultural Marketing Service meat grading programs in 30 states and the District of Columbia, the department said.

University of Tennessee Employee Data Accessed by Hacker

About 36,000 University of Tennessee (UT) employees are being notified that their personal information was exposed to a hacker during a nine-month period (August 2005 thru May 2006).

Although we have no indication the hacker accessed or used the personal information, we are taking the precaution of notifying everyone whose information was on the database and urging them to take steps to protect themselves,” said Brice Bible, assistant vice president for information technology.

Agriculture Dept. Computers Hacked

Current and former employees of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) are at risk for identity theft. A hacker had gained unauthorized access into the system early June.

The personal identity information potentially accessed includes individual’s names, social security numbers, and photos. Worksite information that is readily available to the public is also contained within the database. Approximately 26,000 current and former Washington, D.C. area USDA employees and contractors are potentially affected.

Equifax Employee Data At Risk for Identity Theft

A laptop containing Equifax employee names and Social Security numbers was stolen from a worker traveling in London.

The May 29 theft affects nearly all of the Atlanta-based company’s nearly 2,500 U.S. employees, aside from those hired in roughly the last two months, spokesman David Rubinger said.

Personal data of millions of consumers who obtain credit scores from Equifax were not compromised, Rubinger said. Equifax employs about 4,600 people worldwide.

D.C. Workers’ Personal Data Missing

A laptop computer was stolen from the home of an employee of ING U.S. Financial. The unprotected laptop contained unencrypted personal information belonging to 13,000 workers and retirees.

ING, which administers the District’s retirement plan, known as DCPlus, notified the city about the theft late Friday.

The company is mailing a letter to all affected account holders to alert them to the risk of someone using the information to commit identity theft, spokeswoman Caroline Campbell said. The company is also telling customers that it will set up and pay for a year of credit monitoring and identity fraud protection.

Union Pacific Railroad Employees Exposed to Identity Theft

A computer was stolen from the home of a Union Pacific (UP) employee in Omaha, Nebraska. The computer contained personal information such as Social Security numbers and birth dates belonging to about 30,000 of its employees.

Like the VA theft, the UP employee was not following company security procedures.
