For the second time in six months, Chicago Public Schools will pay for credit protection for current and former employees whose personal information was either stolen or released accidentally.

The school system said it will pay for one year of credit protection for the 40,000 employees whose names and Social Security numbers were on two laptop computers stolen from school headquarters Friday.

Fort Monroe Employees Exposed

A laptop computer containing the names, Social Security numbers and payroll information for as many as 16,000 civilian employees here was stolen from an employee’s personal vehicle, officials said Monday.

The computer was password protected and did not contain bank account or bank routing information, Army officials said. The employees all work at the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, which has its headquarters at Fort Monroe.

Metro State College of Denver Student Data Stolen

The laptop computer was stolen from its docking station in the late afternoon of Feb. 28th from a Metro State faculty member’s office on the Auraria Campus.

The stolen computer contained roster information of 988 students enrolled in the faculty member’s classes from the beginning of the 1999 fall semester to the end of the 2002 fall semester. The stolen computer was password protected.

Gulf Coast Medical Center Loses Four Laptops

Four laptop computers with personal information and Social Security numbers on nearly 10,000 Gulf Coast Medical Center patients were stolen recently in two separate incidents, a company official said.

Three laptop computers were stolen from a car in Texas in November, Gulf Coast Medical Center spokesman Rod Whiting said. Those laptops contained the names and personal information of 1,900 patients.

Another laptop was taken from a car in Tallahassee in February. That computer contained the names and personal information of 8,086 patients, Whiting said. “The information is password-protected, so it is highly unlikely that any data was accessed,� Whiting said.

Johnston County Firemen On Alert for ID Theft

SELMA, NC — A stolen laptop in Johnston County has firemen on alert for identity theft. The computer contained the names and social security numbers of volunteer firemen in Selma.
Earlier this week, someone stole a laptop computer from Selma’s Water Treatment Plant. The computer was only valued at about $1,000, but some of the information on it could be priceless. That’s because it contained the names and social security numbers of Selma’s volunteer firefighters.
